Pursuit Experience highlights leadership for students, young adults
 

JACKSONVILLE (FLBaptist)—The Pursuit Experience, designed for students and young adults who are pursuing ministry leadership and desire to be the light of Jesus Christ, will be held Oct. 3-4 at Chets Creek Church.

Keynote speakers at the two-day event and their topics include Jeff Iorg, president of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, “Confirming God's Call”; and Kneeland Brown, executive director of Focus on the Family’s Leadership Institute, “Knowing God and Doing His Will.”

USF ministry to provide students free pregnancy tests, counseling
 

TAMPA (FLBaptist)—Free pregnancy testing for students who suspect they may be pregnant are being offered once a week at the Baptist Campus Ministry center located on the University of South Florida campus this fall.

“We want to do this to help girls who think they are pregnant and are scared and have no one to turn to,” said Rahul Agarwal, Baptist campus minister. “By providing this ministry, we hope to share the Gospel and give hope, while at the same time potentially save lives.”

The dining room light shined brightly in the predawn hours from the home on the main thoroughfare in Panacea, a small fishing village south of Tallahassee on Highway 98.

The home and adjoining antiquated cottages—a quintessential mom and pop motel from the 1950s—once served as a brief respite for tourists and fishermen to enjoy the sparking blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Rick McClung heard the familiar clang of the prison door locking behind him. Stepping through security screens, he was patted down and sent down the hallway.

In the chapel of the Jackson Correctional Institution in Malone, the smartly-groomed McClung was greeted by nearly 60 prisoners, dressed alike in blue, Florida state-issued uniforms. The inmates listened intently to his Bible study from the “Most Excellent Way,” a faith-based program designed to help men and women who struggle with alcohol/ drug addiction.

Florida Baptist leader John Sullivan announces retirement
 

LEESBURG (FLBaptist)—After serving Florida Baptists as the executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention for a quarter of a century, John Sullivan has announced his retirement from the post, effective Feb. 28, 2015.

Sullivan shared his plans with the State Board of Missions, the Convention’s governing body, during a worship service held at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center on Sept. 18 and then gave an official statement during the Sept. 19 meeting.

A life-changing experience for Florida student summer missionaries
 

JACKSONVILLE (FLBaptist)—Two children stood on the side of a Jacksonville East Arlington road selling lemonade when Kourtney Burcroff and her fellow summer missionary first spotted them.

When the children were not there the next day, the two summer missionaries visited their home to buy lemonade and invite them to the backyard Bible club the students were working in conjunction with FaithBridge Church in Jacksonville.

Longtime evangelist Freddie Gage, 81, made great impact for the Kingdom
 

HOUSTON (BP)—Freddie Gage, a Southern Baptist evangelist for more than 60 years whose fervency for souls extended to the SBC's Conservative Resurgence, died Sept. 12 in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. He was 81.

Gage—a teen gang leader who came to Christ after hearing the Gospel preached in 1951 in Houston—was among the initial inductees to the Evangelists Hall of Faith, created in 2008 by the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists.
